CHAPTER 8

BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR

​They laid in bed talking and watching morning television before getting up to go to the bathroom.

​“I’m cooking this morning. Tell me this, do your friends like that egg & rice dish you like?” They were in the bathroom washing up.

​“I’m sure they would, we never had it together. We don’t do sleepovers with breakfast the next morning, we get up and go home.”

​“I added some stuff to it, then there’s Danish and I’ll make a pan of bacon.”

​“That’ll be more than enough.” He said as Joey left the bathroom.

He went into the living room and was surprised to see Felicia sitting on the sofa.

​“What are you doing sitting here so early?”

​“A friend of mine called from NY, who doesn’t understand the time difference. Now, I can’t even go back to sleep. It’s good for Lola, she thinks it’s playtime.”

​“With someone woke I bet she does! I’m going to start breakfast.” He left the room.

​“I’ll be in there to get some coffee in a minute.”

Joey went to the kitchen.

​In the kitchen, he used his rice cooker to make some rice and the food processor to chop some vegetables. He was putting bacon on a pan to go in the oven when his phone rang.

​“Wilbert, why are you calling me from upstairs?”

​“Because Derrick nor I are upstairs, we both had morning appointments because we’re closing down early.”

​“What time did y’all leave?”

​“I left before 7, it was 6 fifty something. I stopped to feed and walk my dog. Derrick left after me. He had an 8:15 appointment.”

​“I thought y’all were still here. I just started breakfast, I’m sure with them nothing will go to waste.” He slid the pan of bacon in the oven as Felicia walked in. “Thanks for calling and I’ll see y’all later.” He ended the call. “Did you see Wilbert & Derrick leave?”

​“No, it had to be really early.” She started to make some coffee. “Lola, I know it’s breakfast time.” She opened the refrigerator to get the dog’s food. “Dad, are you cooking this morning?”

​“Yes, how was dinner with Vance? I was knocked out when you got in.”

​“It was good, we have to call on facetime at midnight.” Joey laughed!

​“And if y’all don’t he’ll be calling me, so be sure you call.”

​“We already planned on it. We stopped by to see Dwinelle & Toby too, they moved into their own apartment as well, it’s not fully furnished yet though.”

​“Good for them! How are those boys?”

​“They seemed alright. Dwinelle is working with an attorney here, and Toby’s no longer at the grocery store he works in retail now. Come go outside Lola, good morning Timothy.” She left the kitchen with her coffee.

She left the machine and pods out on the island.

​“You can make coffee for you and your friends, Wilbert & Derrick have already left.”

​“Nope, they get 1 day and theirs was yesterday. They’ll be coming down here to make their own coffee today.” He called upstairs to his friend’s rooms. “Dude, if you want coffee this morning you’ll have to come to the kitchen to make it.
